Tool Recommendations

Tool Recommendations

Every tool mentioned in this book is browser-based. No installation required. Every one has a genuinely free tier, not a trial. Start with one, learn it well, then branch out.

The Core Three

These are your primary AI assistants. Each thinks differently, with different strengths and blind spots. Start with one and learn it properly before trying others. When something matters, run it through two and compare.

Claude

Anthropic / Recommended

Our top recommendation. Exceptional at long-form analysis, nuanced writing, and working with large documents. Projects let you build reusable assistants with custom instructions.

Deep research, file creation, web search, and agentic coding via Claude Code. The thinking is consistently sharper on complex tasks.

Google Gemini

Google

Deep integration with Google Workspace. If you have a MyGovUC account, you already have Gemini, the full version including thinking model and Deep Research.

Gems let you save reusable instructions. NotebookLM pairs naturally with it for document synthesis.

ChatGPT

OpenAI

The most widely known AI assistant. Strong at general writing, brainstorming, and conversational back-and-forth.

Custom GPTs let you build reusable specialists. Large ecosystem of community-built GPTs to explore.

The Specialists

These tools do one thing exceptionally well. You won’t use all of them every day, but each one solves a specific problem faster than any general-purpose AI can. Add them to your toolkit as the need arises.

Canva

Design Tool

Design tool for everything visual: social posts, infographics, reports, presentations, short videos.

AI features built in, including text-to-image and video generation powered by Google Veo. Far more accessible than Adobe for non-designers.

We are also the official Canva Agency and Reseller Partner in Malaysia.

NotebookLM

Google | Document Synthesis

Upload policy papers, consultation reports, any stack of documents.

It summarises, extracts key points, answers questions, and generates Audio Overviews: a podcast-style discussion of your content you can listen to on your commute.

Nano Banana

Google | Text-to-Image

Google’s image generation model built into Gemini. Type a description, get a stunning image in seconds.

Excellent for social media visuals, marketing materials, and creative mockups. Available free inside Gemini, just select “Create images” from the tools menu.

Google Veo 3

Google | Text-to-Video

AI video generation with native audio. Describe a scene, get a cinematic 8-second clip with synchronised sound effects and dialogue.

Available free via Google Vids and Google Flow with daily limits. Note: most serious video generation tools require a paid plan for meaningful output.

On paid vs free: The paid versions of the core tools are meaningfully better than the free ones. The gap is real. The cost is roughly one dinner out per month. If these tools save you five hours, and they will, the math is clear.

Choosing Your Starting Point

If you’re a government officer with MyGovUC, you have two strong options. Gemini is already included in your account, so start there for tasks tied to Google Workspace. For deeper analysis, strategic writing, and complex prompting, try Claude. The free tier is genuinely capable. Between the two, you can go surprisingly far without spending a ringgit.

If you’re in corporate with Microsoft 365, check what version of Copilot your company has licensed. If it’s the full version, use it for in-app tasks. For standalone thinking work, strategic papers, policy analysis, long-form writing, Claude is our recommendation. Start with the free tier, upgrade to Pro when you see the difference.

If you’re starting fresh with no work account, sign up for Claude. The free tier gives you access to a genuinely powerful AI with no tricks or paywalls on quality. ChatGPT and Gemini are strong alternatives. Try all three, settle on the one that clicks with how you think.
