Tool Recommendations
Tool Recommendations
Every tool mentioned in this book is browser-based. No installation required. Every one has a genuinely free tier, not a trial. Start with one, learn it well, then branch out.
The Core Three
These are your primary AI assistants. Each thinks differently, with different strengths and blind spots. Start with one and learn it properly before trying others. When something matters, run it through two and compare.
The Specialists
These tools do one thing exceptionally well. You won’t use all of them every day, but each one solves a specific problem faster than any general-purpose AI can. Add them to your toolkit as the need arises.
On paid vs free: The paid versions of the core tools are meaningfully better than the free ones. The gap is real. The cost is roughly one dinner out per month. If these tools save you five hours, and they will, the math is clear.
Choosing Your Starting Point
If you’re a government officer with MyGovUC, you have two strong options. Gemini is already included in your account, so start there for tasks tied to Google Workspace. For deeper analysis, strategic writing, and complex prompting, try Claude. The free tier is genuinely capable. Between the two, you can go surprisingly far without spending a ringgit.
If you’re in corporate with Microsoft 365, check what version of Copilot your company has licensed. If it’s the full version, use it for in-app tasks. For standalone thinking work, strategic papers, policy analysis, long-form writing, Claude is our recommendation. Start with the free tier, upgrade to Pro when you see the difference.
If you’re starting fresh with no work account, sign up for Claude. The free tier gives you access to a genuinely powerful AI with no tricks or paywalls on quality. ChatGPT and Gemini are strong alternatives. Try all three, settle on the one that clicks with how you think.
