Posters are everywhere. But most of them get ignored.
You’ve probably seen one too many posters that are cluttered, confusing, or just plain boring. The truth is, a lot of people jump into designing without understanding what makes a poster effective.
Good design isn’t just about making things “pretty”—it’s about making sure your message gets across, fast.
In this post, I’ll walk you through a simple, clear way to design better posters—even if you’re not a designer. And I’ll show you why Canva is the perfect tool to get started.
First, What’s the Difference Between a Flyer and a Poster?
We often use the words interchangeably, but they serve different purposes:
Flyers | Posters |
---|---|
Inform & explain in detail | Grab attention quickly |
Small, detailed, can have paragraphs | Large, bold, easy to read from a distance |
Held & read closely, designed for engagement | Seen at a glance, designed for fast impact |
Why Most Posters Fail
From my experience running design workshops, here are the three most common mistakes I see:
- Too much text – If everything is important, then nothing stands out.
- Weak visual contrast – Poor use of color or size makes the poster hard to read.
- No clear focus – The viewer doesn’t know what to look at or what to do next.
So how do we fix that?
The Formula for a Great Poster
Whether you’re designing for an event, promotion, or announcement, these 3 things must be clear:
1. Attention-Grabbing
Highlight the selling point.
Is the poster about a free class? A limited-time offer? An exciting speaker? Make that the headline. Use bold fonts, strong colors, or eye-catching visuals.
2. Hierarchy & Clarity
Guide the reader’s eyes naturally.
Your most important info should be the biggest. Supporting details can be smaller. Use spacing, alignment, and contrast to create visual flow.
3. Call to Action (CTA)
Tell people what to do next.
Should they scan a QR code? Visit a website? Message you on WhatsApp? Make it obvious and easy.
But… I’m Not a Designer
That’s okay. Most people who join my classes aren’t designers either. Here’s how you can still create great posters:
1. Use Templates
Canva has thousands of professionally-designed poster templates. Don’t start from scratch—pick one that fits your message and tweak it.
Pro tip: If you find yourself changing everything in a template, you probably picked the wrong one.
2. Match Your Vibe
Is your poster for a formal government event? A fun student gathering? A business promo?
Choose templates that match your tone. Canva even lets you search by keywords like “webinar poster” or “sale poster.”
3. Don’t Overthink the Design
Stick to:
- Max 3 fonts
- Clean structure
- Enough white space
4. Follow the 5 design principles
These are game-changers for beginners.
- Alignment
- Contrast
- Hierarchy
- Proximity
- White Space
Mastering these basics will instantly make your designs more balanced and effective.
Real-World Demo: A Simple AI Webinar Poster
In a recent live class, we created a poster for an online AI webinar. Here’s how we did it:
1. Asked the right questions before starting:
- Who is the poster for?
- What’s the vibe? (Formal, clean)
- Where will it be shared? (Social media, WhatsApp)
Knowing where the design will be shared is important—Is it square for Instagram? Horizontal for Facebook banners? A4 size for print? A common mistake is starting the design right away without knowing where it’ll be used.
2. Picked a clean Canva template with a modern style.
3. Swapped in our own content:
- Big title: “Free AI Webinar”
- Date & time
- Speaker photo
- Clear CTA: Scan QR to join
